The Berlin Philharmonic String Quintet emerged from the longstanding collaboration between violist, Wolfgang Talirz and violinist, Romano Tommasini with Russian master cellist Tatiana Vassilieva. The ensemble’s first concert was given in February 2007 at the Concertgebouw in Brugges, Belgium. The ensemble’s success was immediate and the quintet has since been invited to perform across Europe and Japan.

The quintet’s unusual composition of two violins, viola, cello and double bass, make for interesting and unorthodox programs, comprised of popular classical works as well as virtuoso compositions, . Besides original and arranged works by Dvorak, Brahms, Mozart or Schubert, the quintet perform pieces for string orchestra also. The ensemble crosses the boundaries of a purely chamber music formation towards one with symphonic dimensions. All five string sections of the orchestra are represented, and the addition of the double bass adds tremendously to the breadth of sound. Further highlights include selected string quartets and instrumental transcriptions, pieces which highlight the soloists of the quintet, and combinations from Rossini to Kagel.
